Swimming and Water Safety

The National Curriculum for PE states:

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

At Millfields, all pupils have one term of swimming in Year 3, and 2 terms of swimming in Year 5 to esnure that pupils are able to swim before they leave primary school.

Swimming lessons are facilatated by qualified Swimming Instructors at Kings Hall Leisure Centre which is within walking distance of the school.
