Swimming and Water Safety

The National Curriculum for PE states:

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

At Millfields, all pupils have 10 hours of intensive lessons in Year 3 (daily for 10 days) and 10 hours of intensive swimming lessons in Year 6 (daily for 10 days) to esnure that pupils are able to be confident swimmers before they leave primary school.

Swimming lessons are facilatated by qualified Swimming Instructors at Kings Hall Leisure Centre which is within walking distance of the school.

They offer amazing courses during term time and the holidays!

Each year there is also an assembly on water safety that usually takes place at the end of the summer term before the long holiday to emphasise the importance of keeping safe in water.
